On trying to make it as a trans girl of color in the heart of the empire.

As a queer person who experienced homelessness for 6 mos in my early twenties and had few resources during those years to help me survive + loads of trauma, I relate hard.

of pressure to live a life of crime, to be the perfect woman. But don' fel guilty about it. You'll never have all of the right clothes, makeup, hair chat will suddenly add up into an unclockable woman. On my fishiest days, where I fully believe I'm giving Cis Girl, I get clocked by two or three people. I's very humbling and a nice reminder that passing is a losing game. Cis women chase this perfection, too, and it sucks years off their lives. Embrace imperfection. Be a nasty, hairy, disheveled, woman. Be the kind of woman with perfect makeup and fucked up hair or no makeup and impeccable tresses of hair cascading down your back. Wear your mom's hand-me-down Prada bag with your sweaty polyester nightgown that you stole from Village Discount. Don't try to be a good girl. The only reason that us queers of color are at the bottom of this totem pole is because white dudes set it up this way centuries ago. They pilfered, they stole, they lied, killed, raped, burned shit to the ground, and set it up so they'd be on top. I'm not saying you should emulate the White Man, but I do think that breaking a few of the White Man's laws can help you get up from rock bottom. How're you supposed to save money when you zero out your paycheck every month on food and rent? Imagine what you could do with the money you spend in one year on groceries. Crime is not only something you'll have to get used to as a trans person, it's a part of our history. Transsexuals, transgender people-we all transgress against the norm. We have to break the law sometimes. I'm writing this while living in the heart of the Empire, smack dab in the middle of the United States. There's a concerted effort to scapegoat trans people, queers, drag queens, all of us weirdos and try to erase us from public life. The ACLU has declared an emergency on behalf of trans people because we're facing unprecedented, coordinated legislative attacks against our personhood, all under a Democrat president who seems to be asleep… hard to imagine a Republican president taking over and helping all these losers in their genocidal rage. Right now, I'm living in a perfectly legal transgender body. But next year I could be considered a criminal just for having a gender marker that's different from the one I was assigned at birth. Legislation could change the act of taking estradiol into a criminal act worthy of years in prison. But a life of crime has gotten me this far, it's gotten me my career, a loving community of found family and blood relatives. It's shown me unending happiness. All those years of petty theft, of illegal existence, prepared me for the ultimate act of criminality: girlhood. And since I've already committed myself to this life of crime, I'm ready to continue to break whatever laws the man will write to keep me chained up.

This shard from #cyberpunk2077 feels so prescient. This (incredible) video game gives players a glimpse of a realistic future US (called NUSA) where end-stage capitalism has led to the absolute extremes of wealth inequality and access to healthcare, privacy, food, water and shelter.
