Oof, I have the Returned to 10th Grade Geometry dream all the time, except for me it's Physics 😅

I wasn't actually using a song, I really like to count seconds in my head :D I count them as I do my morning washing-up routine and my physical therapy exercises and it's calming! Which songs were you using though?

It is devastating to me that Kids These Days won't be able to understand this particular Tori Amos lyric (and then I thought about whether or not Kids These Days are even listening to Tori Amos anymore and that was bleak too ...)

Oof, I'm sorry, that sounds absolutely awful. Especially since we all know she's a PERFECT AND AMAZING little human -- it must be exhausting for you to have to have to continually emphasize her "deficits" to these people. It really does seem like the system is designed just to exhaust & demoralize 😭

I cannot laugh at you, only WITH you, because I have three different kinds of Loop earplugs!

I can't even make a joke at anyone else's expense here, because I'm the one who's stuck in the past, I started re-watching SG-1 season one last month 😂

Oh my goodness that's SO cute! If you ever wake up and go into her bedroom only to find a box of pastries & chocolates and a scribbled note reading, "BRB, will return her by dinner, thanks and sorry" it's because I've come and stolen her for an afternoon. To hang out. BECAUSE I LOVE HER ALREADY 😍

Oh, yes, thank you! I wanted to link this article in the thread but I couldn't find it. When I Googled, all that came up was loads of articles written by people who don't read romance OR fantasy and were looking at it from an outsider's POV. 🙄 Jenny's article is by far the best one I've read on it!

pretty sure in my 20s I played that song like 500 times. the foreboding ... the sense that It Is Coming ... absolutely perfect soundtrack to Baudrillard 👌 (who is an absolutely chilling/prophetic read now that we're in 2025, you're totally right)

Goodreads is my favorite form of self-harm

I have been poking around Goodreads and Storygraph for recs, and reading some middle grade to vet it, but I kept thinking, "Aaah, I need an actual librarian to help me with this! ;) This is their specialty, all my reading is 25 years out of date!"

I'm getting stymied by what reading level to pick; her mom wanted something more age-appropriate (less scary/less violence). But! She's very emotionally intelligent, and even though she can't read books on her own yet on paper, she listens and comprehends audiobooks at higher level, I think

Ooh, I did actually want to ask you this! 💕 I'm trying to get my 6-year-old niece off of the Harry Potter audiobooks (for obvious reasons 😓). She really loves the magic & magic school aspects -- any recs for better books that would scratch that itch? ++

like, monkeys IRL don't all have a little circle/oval on their belly, but apparently cartoon monkeys do and they don't look right without it

This is so true, actually! :D

There was a period where my partner and I would leave each other cartoon drawings on the fridge whiteboard, and we realized very quickly that there are definitely certain Conventions for each animal ... ++

I'm not sure how many words Hatchling has yet, but obviously, regardless of all the debate -- when she can talk she is the ultimate authority and can deliver the final verdict on what the blue one is :D
November 18, 2025 at 12:05 AM
I am confused by this, too ... I assumed "cow" for the blue one, but the lack of horns is making me think it could also be a weird pig?

@forestofglory.bsky.social has often said that a genre is "works that are in conversation with one another," which is a definition that I really like. rather than just sharing similar elements, books in a genre are reading, talking to, and responding to, each other, and developing together
