Some pretty sage advice, found on FB:
Things You Should Do If You Are An American Planning on Staying - Get or renew your passport and make sure you have copies of your id. If your gender identity is not consistent with your identification, figure out how you are going to handle that. - If you own a home or have power in a public space and have space you could adapt and extra funds do the following. A. Build a quarantine space with air cleaning, ideally an attached bathroom, a microwave and minifridge if you can for food. We live in the pandemicine and bird flu is like five minutes from going full pandemic. B. Consider building concealed space into your home. I'm not going to go into details on facebook, but there may be things you want to hide. - Consider getting a dog, and better locks on your doors, including maybe a bar for the doors. Acquire plywood and scrap wood for covering windows, and blackout curtains. The government is likely to encourage lawlessness in some areas. Protect yourself. No, I'm not recommending guns for most people, there are plenty of guns in the US right now, if you know what you are doing you probably already have them, if you don't, get a dog and good locks. - Start talking to your neighbors. Yes, even the Trumpy ones. You may not like or trust them, but you may need them, and some Trumpy neighbors may be becoming disaffected. You can be mad, but keep the door open. You want the lines of communication to be open, you want your neighbors to know you. Bring cookies. Help them out. Ask them to borrow something. Be a good neighbor. - Pick some institution in your community and support it. With time, money, showing up to meetings, getting to know people. It doesn't have to be the biggest or most obvious one - yes, the food pantry and planned parenthood, but the other stuff too - in fact, stepping up for small community museums, your local library, food not bombs, your local fire station - these are about to be under the gun. Skip the cops. - Find out everything you can about how your STATE GOVERNMENT is going to respond to the federal government's actions. What about your town or city? Talk to people in government. Make sure they know the direct consequences to you and your family. Ask them about what they will do if... - If you don't have any preps, now is the time. Start with 3 days of water and food and meds if at all possible. Go up from there. A. Water can come from the tap in bottles you get for free out of recycling (soda bottles are generally a bit sturdier than milk bottles and have less bacteria.) You can change the water out every single month, and you dont have to add anything to it. If you want to keep it longer, add five drops of bleach to each liter of the water and it will keep a year. B. If you can, buy a little extra of food that lasts, but many people can't. Instead, look on freecycle and buy nothing groups for people giving things away, including expired food (most canned and preserved food is fine for several years past the sell by date.) Check out the local dumpster diving scene. Ask your food pantry if they have food they can't get rid of. But build up a food reserve and learn to cook it. If you have members of your household that need specifics, work on that. C. Consider asking your doctor to up your dose of a med if possible, allowing you to split pills to build up a reserve. You may be able to buy online from international pharmacies if you have money, depending on the prescription. If you can skip an occasional dose safely, build up a reserve that way. Also, if you have insurance, often insurance will pay once a year tto replace lost meds - you could report yours lost. - If you have been preparing for a while, good on you. Now is the time to organize and clean out those preps, take a look at what you have, what you need, what you can share with others. Got preparedness books you've never read? Got tools you've never used? Get them out and read the manuals … If you've been preparing for a while, find someone you know who can't prepare - a local single parent, an elder living with health issues, a new young adult or college student, a neighbor, and make a preparedness kit for them (with their consent, of course) - do it gradually "Hey, in March, I'm giving you a lifestraw, a 7 gallon water storage bottle, and some water purification tablets. Yes, you can laugh at me, but...keep them. I'll be back in April...with paper maps, 20lbs of rice and a box of protein bars... etc... Adopt someone and help them prepare. -Start a preparedness coop. Everyone throws in what they can afford, and you make or build or buy what you need. For example, an urban neighborhood might need a community garden and a collection of preservation equipment, a composting toilet so that if the water is off you don't spread disease, a quarantine space, a manual water pump - but EVERYONE DOESNT NEED THESE THINGS. Work together. - Get ready for sustained internet and power outages. I won't go over all the preparedness steps, but I 100% expect them. Find alternate means of communication, get some workbooks for your kids if they are out of school, get hard copies of media you value. - Start a garden. In your window. On your balcony. In your yard. You will need it. If you have one, expand your crops based on things that grow well, and store well. Learn about food preservation (NOTE I AM NOT SAYING CANNING - yes, you can can, but most people do not realize what a range of possible techniques there are.) - Make at least one international friend and get all their contact information. Ask them if they would be willing to keep communicating with you during a crisis. This is important because outside folk can pass on your observations about what's happening, and also because they can tell you what's happening from a less censored position. - DO NOT FUCKING COMPLY IN ADVANCE Obviously, this is not a comprehensive list. But let's get on it, folks.
