Writer of fantasy + more.
While writing outside at a conference, a passing pigeon became a prophet in this WIP. Still deciding if the pigeon will become a familiar or just a background character.

the skills that go into creativity are trade/labor skills. the same metrics that you learn carpentry or cooking apply to drawing or singing or acting.

anyone can learn them. anyone can gain experience with them. everyone should be paid for them.
My grievance with the notion of talent is how much it disempowers individuals and how deterministic it is — how it causes most to believe that there is an age limit to learning and developing skills, and most importantly, that it’s not as worthy of trying as a result

If you're a writer, wondering why you should bother writing with the world on fire. It feels like it's not important, I need you to understand that it is.

Even if it is just because it keeps you moving forward? Even if it only brings YOU joy, that gives you energy to fight & survive.

2026 is the year we should all start reading books again

Books are lovely. Libraries are wonderful places. Second hand book shops are mysterious and magical. Markets and fairs always contain surprise gems. And there are even cafes in forgotten street corners with excellent coffee and reading nooks

I don't know man, but I think you're doing great. Shit is really tough right now on so many fronts. I'm not saying it'll get easier or better anytime soon. I have no idea. But being creative, writing, drawing, whatever, is no small thing. And taking joy in those things is never a waste of time.

My latest deep dive was into surgical tools and procedures in the 1800s. Then I spent far too long wandering into sanitation and sewage management (or lack thereof). It was fascinating, but not a pleasant experience. 🤢

Writer hack: If you stand completely still when someone asks "how's that book you're writing coming along?" they can still see you, but they'll be so put off, they'll leave you alone.

If you got to the end of Stranger Things and said "I wish I had more stories with a gay sorcerer from a small town fighting an eldritch power while crafting a found family," then I've got you covered. Three series, urban/rural and high fantasy available however you read.
