Since we're all talking consent, I thought I'd revive this post I made back on Cohost last year.

Cohost post titled "On Caveat and Consent"

A screenshot shows an anonymous user asking: "I have one question after seeing all of the stuff Caveat puts people through... Is there like a fucking waiver or something? Insurance? Like there's gotta be something right?!... RIGHT!?"

Below the screenshot is the following response: "I received the comment shown above on a recent post. I think this type of question is perfectly reasonable! I've been asked about it in some form or another by a few folks, so I figured I would address it here.

First and foremost, any interactions with Caveat related to training or punishment are strictly and explicitly agreed upon beforehand. Caveat would never pounce a stranger at random, nor is it possible to "prank your friend" and sign them up for her training without their knowledge. Even though I think those types of things can be fun, it's totally out of character for Caveat, so we won't ever see that from her.

Relatedly, Caveat may suggest or even try out a new training regimen on an existing trainee. It's implied that she can understand people's desires to an alarming degree, so this isn't done carelessly. Even still, you can always opt out (safe word, tapping out, etc) at any time."

Cohost response continues with a comic. It shows Caveat finding Simone and asking "Been hiding here in bed all day, have you?" to which Simone gives a defeated reply of "Look, I'm not in the mood. Flatten me or whatever. I don't care." Caveat places a gentle hand on Simone and says "Now, now..." before cuddling up to calm the Shinx. In the final panel, Simone is relaxed and blushing.

Continuing the Cohost text response: "Consent is... so important. I try to consider it very deeply in my art. I love to show it when I can since I think it can create some very touching scenes. However, when dealing with comics or single images, there is rarely any time or space to dedicate to showing explicit agreement to all actions. While it's my responsibility to build character relationships that help imply consent, it's also important for the viewer to not jump straight to worst-case scenarios! If you see two people doing kinky stuff in my art, I ask that you assume they agreed to it."

Cohost text response continues: "A while back, someone sent an anonymous ask that bluntly stated "could you tag your non-con shit". I was really taken back by this. Based on the asker's rudeness, I assume my art appeared on their dash from a reblog and it upset them. I went through my recent art at the time to find what they were referencing and came up empty-handed. None of the scenes were non-consensual. To say any actions between Caveat/Simone are non-con is a bit insulting! Even calling it dub-con is wrong and betrays the type of character Cav is.

So then, why does so much of my recent art show me (Simone) being shocked/nervous/squirmy? Why are cartoon sweat drops flying out of my head all the time?"

An image shows Caveat pulling on some jeans. Simone is halfway slipped inside the back of the jeans, pressed against Caveat's butt. Simone says "Hey, I'm actually stuck and I'm sinking..." while sweat drops cartoonishly fly off of her blushing face.

Cohost text response concludes: "Uh, it's hot. Sorry, that's the truth of it. When two people consent to this type of hunter/hunted play with lots of squishing, smushing, smothering, biting... they both want this stuff to happen, but there is still importance in having the prey try to push back. Not because they hate it, but to extend the encounter. To give stakes. To not go quietly! I don't want to offer my face to Caveat as a free seat, I want her to earn it! Take it from me!! Fight me! Pin me down and wrestle every last ounce of strength from my body until I concede!! I want to be left panting and gasping as she glares down at me before taking what's hers!! FUCK!!!

As for the question about insurance, that's ridiculous. In the world Caveat lives in, all forms of healthcare are free. Insurance companies don't exist.

People like this get deeply uncomfortable when you make them explain why something got shelved for 'being adult,' or what 'being adult' even is, and I suggest any scripts that get written lean into that.
