Both were originally built with single-pane windows and no insulation. We added insulation to the 1960 house but the giant single pane picture windows were an ongoing problem.

I’m gonna say, having lived in midcentury suburban housing AND an almost entirely un-renovated 1913 apartment (among other things), the 1913 apartment was superior once we put a stacking washer-dryer in the kitchen. Nicer materials generally, huge pantry, and enormous claw foot tub.

Jeans made of stretch denim are more immediately comfortable than 100% cotton denim, sure, but they wear out MUCH faster.

my dad’s half-lined wool sport coat that he got in the 60s (and I adopted in the 80s and my son wore in the aughts and it’s still good today) is better made than anything I could afford now, and he wasn’t wealthy when he got it
Pleather shoes are short-lived trash

That and starting from the introduction of steel-roller flour milling in the 19th century, their diets were notably low in fiber, so if they didn’t have the trots from pathogens, their default state was constipation

“Filing too early” is a known journalistic hazard. If you look back, the first stories after Katrina passed over New Orleans were all, “Storm not too bad! Worst scenarios didn’t occur!”
The levees broke 24h later.
A responsible news org looks for a “2nd day” story to confirm if their 1st holds up.

I try to tell people they don’t need to keep their old textbooks but when the textbook is also a coffee table art book it’s a little different from a macroeconomics book you haven’t opened in 30 years

Oh, it’s documented! I was born in 1970 and I remember the pull-tab pop-tops. Easy to cut a foot on that sharp curl of metal, and if the ring broke off the tab before it came off the can you needed an even older pointy church key opener to open it!
The shift definitely happened around 1980.

that sounds like the level of nerdery where - remember that pediment of skulls in the Paths of the Dead in LOTR? I came home, pulled a Celtic art & archaeology textbook off the shelf, and found the photo of that exact ossuary

The pre-made refrigerated entrees and dinners that just need heating are often covered, though. Not real useful if unhoused, but if you’ve got a microwave to bring them home to they work.
sadly, they would use up a SNAP budget real fast.

Ours at least are insulated and not giving any trouble
and we got utility-subsidized insulation blown into the walls a couple of years ago, which is doing VERY nicely, which is good because home heating oil is UP

the smaller party rings they sell at the grocery store make a really fantastic “too hot to cook” summer dinner!
