This is my first listen to Assassins since I was introduced to it as a teenager, and I definitely appreciate it more now, but I feel like it's almost reached time-capsule status for the late 1980s. It's not shocking to say American culture is violent anymore. We know.

I had a road trip this spring where I listened to Hadestown on repeat for days. Day 4 I finally tried to turn on Sweeny Todd (which I've loved before) and within the first two songs I turned it off. I guess I'm sick of media pointing out social problems without solutions now that we're fully in it.

Assassins is either the perfect or the worst musical for these times. I feel like Hadestown is aspirational and modern, Assassins is good but its def a sardonic Sondheim musical (Sweeney Todd but analyzing America's assassination culture). It's important and interesting, but doesn't provide answers.

I am a big fan of "no wasted experience," particularly since I haven't always had complete control of my life (who does, really? A lucky few maybe.). Nice to know there were skills gleaned in the "idle" moments.

I feel like the central theme-ish thing was maybe we treat eachother most poorly and act our worst when we view eachother as machines instead of the complex universes we all are, but don't trust me, I went to school to over-analyze media and can make a theme out of anything.

Okay, yeah, that was weird and hard to read with all the slurs and violence, but still a fun ride. I rolled my eyes big time when he self-inserted himself into his own book, but it grounded it in a way. Feels like a negative time capsule for the time it was written.
