Currently listening to @emmabclarke.bsky.social @bbcradio3bot.bsky.social on sounds. Opening piece Aspice Domine by Marian Consort is sublime. Do yourself a favor, stop the doom scrolling, and check it out.

Thanks to Alex Strada for a wonderful tour of her #CollectiveMobilities exhibit at Pratt. This is a collaborative exhibition that centers on redistribution and mutual aid to support Pratt's neighbors experiencing homelessness. www.pratt.edu/events/colle...

A point that bears repeating:

The anti-smoking movement was fueled by state/local activists who overwhelmed Big Tobacco's lobbying might.

The fight against car bloat needs to be grassroots as well. Even when Dems have power, the car industry's lobbyists have Washington in a stranglehold.
Like smoking a cigarette, driving a giant SUV/pickup endangers anyone nearby.

The narrative power of secondhand smoke galvanized the anti-tobacco movement in the 1980s – and it could do the same for car bloat today.

My deep dive, in Vox 🧵

Gigantic SUVs are a public health threat. Why don’t we treat them like one?
The anti-tobacco playbook could help turn the US public against their beloved oversized cars.

I maintain that the only plan the city has for the crumbling BQE is to hope there aren't many people on it when it collapses.
Brooklyn politicians call for patch job on BQE, say Mayor Adams can't do permanent fix
A group of elected officials wrote in a letter that they've given up hope that Mayor Eric Adams will make good on his plan to rebuild a crumbling section of the highway.

Dangerous by Design extends to vehicles as well as roads.
New study from IIHS shows that car bloat is dangerous even at low speeds:

If hit by a sedan going 27 mph, a pedestrian has a 60% chance of a moderate+ injury and 30% chance of a serious one.

If it's a pickup going 27 mph, those odds rise to 83% and 63%, respectively.

Vehicle height compounds dangers of speed for pedestrians
New pedestrian injury risk curves calculated by IIHS show that vehicles with taller front ends begin to cause serious injuries at lower speeds.

Tuned in to watch the second half of United v Arsenal and was greeted with this message and image. Think the algorithms at Peacock might perhaps need a little tweaking.

Great resource for new arrivals like myself.
There are now over 100 Financial Times journalists from across the newspaper on this Bluesky starter pack. It would be rude not to follow them all, imo!

Well said Ms AOC. Don't rise to the clickbait.
“Don’t feed the trolls” also extends to bad opinion pieces in papers of record.

They run them bc people react to them the most.

If we stop linking to bad columns and instead post thinkers we find valuable (& generate convo around it), incentives change.

It’s not easy and takes constant practice!

Agree with this 1000%. Interesting that in my line of work (academia) people get really really annoyed if something is published that they've contributed to and they're not cited by name.
Some pushback on this. We all have to devise our own social media experience and if pseudonyms work for you then I understand. But my experience is that I want to know who I'm talking to and hearing from. I will lose out a bit and perhaps i'll add recs from trusted names but on balance. . .
