Having been a person in enough pain that I used a cane in public (although never for a photographed formal occasion), the look on his face seemed more like "in a lot of pain here" to me, than loathing. I don't know what he normally looks like, though, so maybe that was his loathing face.

Right. She didn't insist that he remove his right hand from the cane he was leaning on. And it's extremely odd to respond to a proferred right hand with a left hand full of bible. As for not making eye contact, perhaps he was looking down at his cane so he didn't have to say "cane, can't shake".

He had a pretty tight grip on his cane with his right hand. Seems like maybe he said something, and VP realized she shouldn't insist he let go of his adaptive device.

Dan has a fair number of these things. His parents boxed them up and gave them to him. We shared them with the kids at the appropriate age. They treated them like museum relics.
