She needed me to say yes so she could proceed, and I needed her to proceed so we could survive this awful place. Hopefully richer. I didn’t intended to abandon her but I wasn’t going to follow her to my death, either. Hells, I was only here to handle the money. How I let myself get wrapped up in the rest of it was a mystery, but I wasn’t interested in becoming a fine red mist on the walls of some backwoods mountain town for the dubious virtues of honesty and loyalty.

Spirits raised, the novices took the podium one by one. Some were completely unaffected by the litany. Others left with strange bruises. One man made it to the end, then immediately passed out. A success, if barely. Only a single novice failed; A frail woman from a minor house, who vanished into thin air, leaving behind a wilted sunflower. The reckless joy of their gathering dried up immediately, but recovered after the next two novices, redacted and one of his surly friends, passed with no particular reaction. Ranked 12th and 17th. Quite good, unfortunately. The class initially held over 140 souls, gradually whittled down to about 64 through a combination of death, life-altering transfiguration, and ineptitude. It would’ve been satisfying if redacted had at least been average.
