Anti-populist, reading, cycling, walking, postcrosser, Amnesty International, supporter of and (very minor) shareholder in Lincoln City FC, jazz and folk music.
A poignant wartime love story and a beautifully written evocation of the French countryside in summer. It’s also about resistance and collaboration and all points in-between as well as the sheer nastiness of fascism and fascists. Written in 1944 but so relevant 81 years later.

A postcard from the USA. In this house in Newport (now Fountain City), Indiana, Quakers, Levi and Catherine Coffin, provided a sanctuary for enslaved people on their journey to freedom. The house has secret doors and hidden rooms.

An exploration of how the memory of a lost loved one persists. Jan, a Dutch engineer, travels to help drain the English Fens. He falls in love with Eliza, a Fenwoman, but heartbroken leaves for New Amsterdam. Falsely(?) convicted, Eliza is transported to Virginia. A compelling novel.

Amidst the sectarian violence of 1970s Northern Ireland, Cushla tries so hard to do the right thing as a daughter, sister and schoolteacher. Michael’s exploitative love affair with her ends in tragedy and unhappiness. A deeply engaging, poignant novel.

Patriotic but down-at-heel spy Simon Sharman, working in today’s world of autocrats, kleptocrats and OSINT, uncovers ‘Russian pentration at the heart of the British establishment.’ An up-to-date convincing espionage novel.

The views of the disgraceful new Mayor of Lincolnshire, Dame Jenkyns.
May 2, 2025 at 10:20 AM
The words people associate most closely with Reform are ‘dangerous’ and ‘racist’. To defeat Reform in the Lincolnshire mayoral election the tactical choice is Labour (Jason Stockwood).

Dame Jenkyns (Reform), who is ‘not a proponent of elected mayors’, wishes to be Mayor (or Gauleiter in her case) of Greater Lincolnshire. Voting for her is clearly a vote for Musk/Trump politics. Also note coy remarks about living in Lincolnshire when Gildersome, West Yorks is home.

A recent council by-election result in Lincoln: Lib Dems taking the seat from Labour.

Interesting by-election result in Park ward, Lincoln. Lib Dems taking the seat from Labour. Unenthusiastic Labour and Conservative voters switching to Lib Dems? Reform beats Conservatives but Reform + Conservatives still losing in an area of mixed demography.
