I think this is a very good question Stephen. I ascribe it in part to the lower intellectual and managerial abilities of MPs. (Or perhaps, born 1959, I just wrongly remember politicians in the late 1960s and 1970s as being of higher calibre). The rise of PR as a technique is also connected.

Thank you Anton: clear sighted, as ever. But I do fear that however strong the system might be then someone at the top can break it - Trump, Erdogan, Putin, Johnson, Orban &c &c. I conclude that all we can do is wait until Trump has gone. That in turn means being resilient (and no kow-towing)...
