Labour's election strategy was to smother the Tories, allow no space for attacks. Tories still used the tax and spend attack line though, while refusing to acknowlege they had been doing that themselves.

That's the electorate's wishful thinking, the default position. 'I want things to improve without having to pay extra.'
The Tories talked about cutting taxes while the tax burden increased so the idea Labour were promising to freeze the tax burden is not credible.

He understands it as a euphemism: we're all workers but too many are not actually working, 'economically active.' If there are job shortages, then take some from the inactive pile to fill the gap. Job done. The kind of simple solution that appeals to authoritarians.

I think high end wealth inequality has destroyed democracy and is a truly negative externality, another reason the middle and working classes should be angry despite being materially wealthier than ever in absolute terms. But they are materially wealthier
