If you care about language evolution, or are just looking for some heavy-ish weekend reading, Geurts & Moore (Eds.) Evolutionary Pragmatics is now available to order. The paper version won't be shipped until the end of August, but there's an electronic version on Oxford Academic today.

The 2025 PAMBA prize has been awared to @giuliapalazzolo.bsky.social. The judges - @wileyprof.bsky.social, @kristinandrews.bsky.social, @susanamonso.com, @lgruen.bsky.social, and me - thought her a worthy winner. It was a very strong field, though.

The story behind this painting is fascinating, but also it looks uncannily like an Aphex Twin album cover.

The coastal city of Rabat is also great. It has beautiful Islamic architecture, with French colonial influences too. The first picture is part of the Kasbah de los Udayas in Rabat; the second is one of the gates to the City of Salé.

The campus is beautiful, although it was a little deserted. UM6P has several campuses and the Rabat one is very new. Courses are being launched slowly. Since it's Ramadan, many of the current students were also away.

This was the subject of his 1987 book The Formation of a Persecuting Society, which, following its reissue 2007, was described by Madeleine Bunting in the Guardian as “one of the most influential and controversial books of medieval history of the last 20 years”.

Bart Geurts and I have co-edited a volume entitled Evolutionary Pragmatics for OUP. It features contributions from philosophers, linguists, and developmental and comparative psychologists. Our external reviewer was positive, and the volume should be in press in the new year.
