Professor of Philosophy and Director of the EPP BA/BSc at the University of Warwick. My UKRI-funded FLF Communicative Mind project researches human and non-human great ape communication and cognition, and the evolution of language. 🇪🇺🍉 he/him
There's a field of writing on philosophical issues in animal cognition that is dedicated to reconceptualising established philosophical ideas.
The way analytic philosophers take however an issue is first conceptualized as immovable goalposts, never consider an alternative, and just toggle parameters within it til kingdom come makes me fucking depressed

Given the ways in which Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson have involved themselves in this story, it seems possible that someone has a vested interested in destabilising this investigation and using it to harm the government. Is there any evidence that this is happening?

I've always worried about Thiel being so rich, sinister, and clever. Turns he's just rich, sinister, and a deluded fantasist whose mind has lost touch with reality.

I am travelling to the ESPP in Warsaw. My flight from Birmingham to Frankfurt is delayed, and I will miss my Warsaw connection. Lufthansa's best offer so far is a 9pm flight from Frankfurt to Vienna, and then a late flight from Vienna to Warsaw.

Today will suck. But at least there's EC261 🥹

One of the great series of recent years.
I just reread The Wicked+The Divine by @mckelvie.bsky.social & @kierongillen.bsky.social in it's entirety and it's such a perfect book. A full and complete story that doesn't need a page more or less. It's a book that while reading seems it's about everything you need it to be about it. A miracle.

I was a reviewer on this paper. It introduces some much needed clarity into primate pragmatics debates, and will become an important touchstone in future research.
Now published! 📝✅📢
Our review on flexibility in animal communication is out in Biological Reviews @camphilsoc.bsky.social (Open Access).
Huge thanks again to my fantastic co-authors, especially @kirstyegraham.bsky.social. It was a delight to learn from them!

I wrote a commentary on @enactedmind.bsky.social's recent Proceedings B paper, to show why I think the insights of his postnatal dependency hypothesis are so powerful.

You might have heard that psychology has a WEIRD problem. Though it aims to understand human minds, many of its studies have historically been skewed towards WEIRD minds.

In this 🚨NEW PAPER🚨, @kristinandrews.bsky.social and I argue that comparative cognition also has a WEIRD problem. 👇🧵 1/17
