How are Kernel Smoothing in statistics, Data-Adaptive Filters in image processing, and Attention in Machine Learning related?

My goal is not to argue who should get credit for what, but to show a progression of closely related ideas over time and across neighboring fields.

The RL book by Kevin Murphy is finally online (copied shamelessly from the other place) arxiv.org/abs/2412.05265
Reinforcement Learning: An Overview
This manuscript gives a big-picture, up-to-date overview of the field of (deep) reinforcement learning and sequential decision making, covering value-based RL, policy-gradient methods, model-based met...

Nostr, a simple protocol for decentralizing social media that has a chance of working
A guide to the simplest decentralized protocol that isn't peer-to-peer, therefore works.

Firehose access on Bluesky gets shut off for Bridgy Fed temporarily, Bridgy Fed unable to operate w/ Bluesky during that period. Not malicious, but I think @dryad.technology is right that it's a reminder this is a result of centralization. mastodon.social/@mcc/1135412...

Bluesky is a proprietary service operated by a single company, but with an unusually good "API" for plug-in 3rdparty tools. As with other sites that previously had "API"s, that API remains valid only ...

FYI, here's the entire code to create a dataset of every single bsky message in real time:

```
from atproto import *
def f(m): print(m.header, parse_subscribe_repos_message())
FirehoseSubscribeReposClient().start(f)
```

TIL that you can use starter packs to mass mute/block, and that one exists for crypto

There ought to be an "Assholes starter pack" that you can 1-click block
I've decided I'm going to mute anyone that's aggressive/unpleasant towards me, or that I see being like that to someone else.

I mean no offense by it—it's just not why I'm here.

If I'm at the bar after a day at a conference, and someone's being unpleasant, I keep my distance there too.

"computational psychiatry"
The thing that is hard to get about LLMs is that we expected AI to be awesome at math & be all cool logic.

Instead, AI is best at human-like tasks (eg writing) & is all hot, weird simulated emotion. For example, if you make GPT-3.5 “anxious,” it changes its behavior! arxiv.org/abs/2304.11111

I hate the way articles about BSky keep framing choice to move here in terms of left/right and echo chambers. Fundamentally, the bigger issues for me are wanting to see links/current news, wanting to see posts that aren't rage-baiting/content farming, and wanting actually diverse conversations.

It seems to me like the "bsky is ultra leftist Twitter" is fake news? I haven't seen that at all, but I'm just following the ML folks

I am exploring the idea of a self-hosted service which periodically scrapes a Twitter account and mirrors their content on bsky. wondering if I would need to create a ton of email addresses for each bot, though. also, whether I'd be liable for any potential abusive content that gets mirrored.

I've moved to a custom domain, so I'm now @howard.fm. All links to my previous bsky id (jph) should have auto-updated. I created a new "jph" id to avoid anyone taking over external links to my account.
