Dinner (spag bol) is simmering so I can relax for a bit with a whisky & ginger while we chat to SiL (online) over small nephew’s bathtime, which has become the family evening tradition. #ConfinedCocktails

I did my drinking early & unconfined today - afternoon tea (& fizz for the girls 🥂) to round off a lovely day out with my cousin & his partner #ConfinedCocktails

Jack Daniel’s & Ginger for a change. Am disproportionately tired considering that we haven’t actually done that much today, so we are ordering a pizza & cooking can wait until tomorrow. #ConfinedCocktails

Sticking with peppermint tea for now as I’m feeling slightly off colour after ‘flu jab this morning, but dinner is in the oven & hoping I will feel up to something a little stronger later. #ConfinedCocktails

A Dark & Stormy seemed appropriate this evening (though we don’t have it too bad compared with further north & west).

Railway-themed #UnconfinedWalks today, from Shildon to Heighington along the Stockton & Darlington Railway. Replica ‘Rocket’ (steaming) & original(ish) ‘Locomotion’ at the museum; abundant hips & haws along the line; world’s oldest station (in dire need of TLC, sadly) at Heighington.

I’m enjoying the first ‘normal’ weekend in quite a while, between holidays and visitors (excellent though both are, obviously). I have my feet up with stitching and a G&T. There is a bottle of white in the fridge to go with dinner when I get round to doing it. #ConfinedCocktails

Currently enjoying a negroni with my sister in law while cooking dinner (& being supervised by small nephew). It has been Wet all day, but the young master had a fine time checking out the newish under-5s area at Discovery Museum. #ConfinedCocktails

Cheers! Enjoying a Negroni this evening to accompany dinner prep, after a day spent sorting stuff for visit of small nephew next weekend. House is still scarily un-toddler-proofed, but at least I’ve acquired the basics (SiL doesn’t drive, so can’t bring much). #ConfinedCocktails

A favourite walk (1st thing I did when we were allowed out after Lockdown). Park at Dunstan Steads, down the coast past the castle to Howick; return inland. 10 miles or so, but easy going. Alternative parking at Craster. Can also be done anticlockwise if you don’t have weird hang ups like I do!

We are home after a fabulous 2 week holiday on the right side of the Border. Rhubarb & Ginger gin and (not pictured) bath time chat with smallest nephew before reluctantly re-engaging with ‘real’ life. #ConfinedCocktails

G&T tonight (the gin being Edinburgh Gin gooseberry & elderflower, which is really too good to adulterate), after a glorious day out on Hoy - the always excellent walk up to the Old Man. Sadly our last night on Orkney 😢 #ConfinedCocktails

G & T for me (Edinburgh Gin Gooseberry & Elderflower, which is almost too good to adulterate) after a glorious day out on Hoy (obligatory & always excellent walk up to the Old Man). Last night on Orkney 😢

Flying out, ferries back to Kirkwall this evening. The plane is locally known as the ‘flying landrover’. It’s an experience in itself! Airport security minimal & friendly. And no issues changing one of the booked passengers at short notice (_without_ the advertised fee).

Our next transport this morning.

Today has featured archaeology, a favourite beach (and impressive construction efforts by the engineers of the family), coastal scenery and more archaeology. All in glorious sunshine. #UnconfinedWalks

Kirkjuvagr Beyla gin (local, distilled with raspberries & honey) & tonic with a view, remembering that this would be a bank holiday if I wasn’t already on hols.
August 25, 2025 at 6:48 PM
Belated (and properly unconfined) #ConfinedCocktails - local spiced gin with mint lemonade and a peaceful evening view over towards Marwick Head, while the more energetic members of the party have gone for a late walk. Plus bonus last light over the Brough (tide now in).

#TeaUp with a glorious view out to the Brough of Birsay. Something stronger to follow when we’re a bit more settled into our home for the week.

Smoked Rum & Ginger for me (it’s a Burning Barn pre-mix - well worth tracking down) and significant progress on the stitching. Quiet weekend ahead of much driving for family hols at the end of next week. #ConfinedCocktails

Pimms & stitching in the garden this evening (though the sun has nearly gone - there’s an inconvenient tree in the way) #ConfinedCocktails
August 9, 2025 at 6:13 PM
We also have rain up North (much needed, but not cheerful), so I have an espresso martini as a cheering restorative after a very mixed week. Decaf, I hasten to add - I don’t risk caffeine after mid-afternoon. Being wakeful all night isn’t an attractive prospect. #ConfinedCocktails

Evening. I hope things are as ok as they can be for now. I have a pre-mix Garden cocktail (gin, apple, elderflower), but staying indoors where it’s cool, after a lovely but rather warm day out at Studley Royal near Ripon (they’ve got a very nice abbey too). #ConfinedCocktails

Much needed peaceful day. Husband has been hard at work in the garden (results pictured) & I have an Isle of Lewis gin with grapefruit tonic for #ConfinedCocktails

Judging by the lift name this might be the Zermatt side.
