that's true. my prototype was fairly simple so idk about larger projects. collision detection is what I found the most difficult coming from gamemaker, but i'm sure there's resources out there.

my frustration with godot has less to do with it being absolutely programmer-brained and more with the documentation. like sure I can staple together a bunch of tutorials to get something functional but I don't feel like I've really learned the best practices.

anecdotally when I TA'd a class in Fall 2023 i'd say 2/3 of students called the platform X when writing a paper about social media

almost a third of the list are just n64 and snes games. get some zoomers on the committee your millennial is showing.

i think the value in these things is not in the actual end product. like it is mostly pointless to take issue with any one ranking with such a large corpus. really what it lays bare is the strange alchemy of critical reception, sales metrics, recency bias and nostalgic legacy.

but recently I've been thinking about Video Essays and how many of them use vg music even when their subject matter isn't related and it's like damn, not so nonlinear anymore are we?

& i think for some people that's a huge bummer but for me it was like damn, how do we make sense of a broken world?

sml was my introduction to mario and parts of that game are baked into my sensibilities. but the fact that the smo devs were planning to make more direct connections to it in sand kingdom, didn't and still (rightfully) got flak says it all.

getting mad that sarasaland is depicted as a desert when it actually consists of four biomes and not the fact that sml is, at the end of the day, an orientalist fantasy is missing the point
