The ABC members of Vancouver Council really said "f*** them kids" today. First, they killed a motion to make it safer for kids to trick or treat in their neighbourhoods on Halloween - the most dangerous night of the year for child pedestrians - by making it easier to close streets to car traffic.

Hey @cityofvancouver.bsky.social would it be possible me to move the fences over a little bit so these bike racks outside Science World are accessible? This location gets a lot of cargo bikes, and the other rack fills up quickly. @lucymaloney.bsky.social @petermeiszner.bsky.social

Crash today at Broadway & Lakewood, right in front of the school my kids attend. Hundreds of kids cross here daily.

15 crashes annually. No school zone. No traffic calming. No enforcement.

40% of drivers speed here. Each hour, 10+ go 20km/h over. One per day hits 100km/h! & the City does nothing.

Guess which headline is from the @nytimes.com ?

The Guardian calls out dangerous rhetoric and lies for what they are. The NYT wraps them in euphemisms and "both sides" spin. This is how the obscene becomes normalized. Journalists - and all of us - need to stop pretending this is politics as usual.

I voted in my first Canadian federal election today after becoming a citizen 2 years ago. With rising authoritarianism in the US, I’m more grateful than ever to call Canada home. If you can vote, do it—democracy is precious and fragile, and every vote matters.

Bollards are commonly used in European cities to separate pedestrians on sidewalks from vehicles. Here in North America, we tend to only use them to protect physical infrastructure from vehicles.

I was thrilled and honoured to support my friend @lucymaloney.bsky.social in her landslide victory over her conservative opponents for a spot on Vancouver city council. I can’t wait to see all the wonderful things she does for this city! @onecityvan.bsky.social

This is what the BC Conservatives were up to at their annual general meeting last week: discrimination towards queer kids, reversing reconciliation, & criminalizing homelessness. This party came dangerously close to forming government. Do not become complacent, fellow Canadians. It can happen here.

East Van friends, please come out for Trivia Night next Friday! This is a fundraiser to support the Laura Secord grade 7 kids on their big annual field trip in the fall. Plus, it’s a great time - and when else can you drink a beer on school grounds?

We got rid of our last gas appliance recently, & just got this letter from FortisBC urging us to ‘reconsider’ gas. Wild to see a fossil fuel company this desperate to keep people hooked on methane. Fossil gas is terrible for climate & health—especially for kids. This is straight-up propaganda.

This will be my thread of small joys: today my younger child brought me tea in bed, my husband made breakfast for us all, & then my older child & I went for a run in the crisp morning air, stopping to walk on a frozen pond. This evening, we stood & marvelled under the nightly sunset crow commute.

(And yes, I am very sad that I don’t have tickets to see her in Vancouver this weekend.)
