DONNA VORREYER The Sound of Just Before with a line from The Vaccines The last night with my mother, I blinded like a snake in the blue, shed the skin of daughter and switched roles, burst the bladder of hope with the spoke of a morphine drip. Her breath was the color of smoke, unable to breach the cancer's black. There on Elgin Avenue, in the house where I was born, the sun set through living room drapes with the liquid hiss of oxygen. My father finally slept, alone after hours at her side, spilling his own spores of illness and grief. My eyes and mouth swollen and sandpapered dry, furred with lack. I could not have sapped the syrup of sleep if I tried. I don't know if she could hear me, but I read to her, Anne and her escapades, stern Marilla, big-hearted Matthew, my hands scabbed from alcohol swabs and hand-washing. I would buy anything, try anything, take anything to have left my fear curled beneath clean sheets in the spare bedroom. I wanted her to leave feeling a brighter me, one that burned only love.
