Whilst @khodorkovsky.com is right - the West should be ready for a new Cold War - reality is that it already started. We've been in a Cold War with Russia/China/Iran for more than a decade, the problem is most Western leaders have been in denial over it.

Putin’s archrival warns Europe: Brace for Cold War II whatever happens in Ukraine
Former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky tells POLITICO why Russia will take decades to get over the “imperialist-military narrative” that Moscow pushes.

The news in Politico this morning that new EU Member States may be given reduced voting rights is incredibly concerning - such a proposal would do little to relieve distrust in Central and Eastern Europe towards Western Europe. It is in effect an Orientalist policy.

What a huge relief - Moldova will be able to continue on its Euro-Atlantic path.

For all of those who kept hesitating on sending defensive weapons to Ukraine because it would be an “escalation” - is this enough of an escalation for you? Russia deliberately attacked a NATO ally last night. Russia doesn’t care about diplomacy they only want destruction.
Just days after the Polish President visits the White House, Russians send what appear to be over a dozen drones to attack Poland.

With some of Ukraine's allies still refusing to take any action against Russia, Putin continues to expand his war aims.

The representatives of the two EU member states present at this anti-western gathering in Beijing should really be sanctioned. You can’t have it both ways - either you’re defending Western civilisation or you can hang out with China, Russia, and North Korea.

It was great to hold a talk yesterday for students from the Georgian American University about EU politics and foreign policy. Fascinating questions about the impact of the new US administration on the EU, and what cuts to USAID, NED, and RFE/RL mean for neighbourhood policy. 🇬🇪

As always - the countries closest to Russia are the canary in the coal mine for security.

If they feel the need to use land mines for their security then we should take note:

Lithuania, Poland, Latvia and Estonia have announced their withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention on Anti-Personnel Mines.

I struggle to see how anyone can defend this. RFE/RL was key to ending the Cold War - and today continues to be a beacon of hope for those in authoritarian regimes. The creation of ‘Настоящее Время’ in 2017 in particular marked a shift in ending Kremlin monopoly on RU media.

Whilst its great that the EU has introduced the 15th round of sanctions against Russia - the sad reality is that thanks to this slow and incremental approach to sanctioning Russia will be ready for them. We should have been much more drastic and disruptive from the start.

My take on the risk of fragmenting social media too much - during a debate about why people are leaving Twitter/X for Bluesky:
Should we stay on X?

"A lot of pro-EU are leaving X (Twitter). It leaves people more vulnerable to misinformation."

Nudge policy idea: Charge passengers for hand luggage that goes in the overhead (not bags that fit under the seat) and make check luggage free. It would reduce queues at security and delays in boarding.

You aren't a real think tanker unless you have a favourite hotel chain for conferences.
I get to travel a lot for my work, so I'm lucky enough to see airports, train stations, hotels and conference centres in lots of exciting places, and that's about it.
Tomorrow I'm going to Japan to host a xmas event and I absolutely will not see a single bit of Japan outside of my hotel and the conference centre but that won't stop people online going "YOU MUST GO AND CHECK OUT [expensive thing that is five hours from where you're staying]!!!!"

Its easy to trivialise the ground taken by Russia in the last year - however they still occupy a territory the same size as all three Baltic States put together.

The West might be giving tools for defence but still hasn't given Ukraine the right tools to attack and retake lost territory.
This is all the Russians have been able to take in almost a year, at the cost of about 1500 men A DAY.

You heard that right, 1500 PER DAY

The Police in Georgia are once again showing that they aren’t public defenders - but the paid thugs of a pro-Russian mafia state. Many of the protesters arrested last night were beaten whilst in custody. #GeorgiaProtest

I recently did a long form interview with the Dutch newspaper “Nieuw Rechts” talking about Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova. I talked about what Russia is trying to achieve and why we need a more United West to counter the threat from a new axis of evil:

Please all follow what is happening in Georgia right now. They need the support of the West now more than ever:
BREAKING: President Salome Zourabichvili has walked to the special forces preparing to advance against protesters and is now talking to them. She asks them whether they had vowed to protect Georgia and Georgians or Russia, and demands they think of the future of their children!

What the Georgian Dream government has done today is on the same level as when Yanukovych turned his back on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. Expect protests to get much larger.
