Reminiscent of this painting, "The Conquerors" a copy of which was in the arena where I played hockey and lacrosse as a kid. The black soldier here is depicted as an Officer. As a child, i found the grey-fleshed dead marching with the troop quite disturbing...

80 years ago today at 09:52, my Uncle took this photo as his RAF 166 Squadron Lancaster -
and hundreds of RAF, RCAF, RAAF and USAAF bombers - conducted high-altitude
demolition of the Berchtesgaden SS camp and Obersalzburg Nazi compounds. Unusually for Bomber Command, this was a daylight mission /2

Good Friday dinner. Ecuadorian legume & cabbage soup called "Fanesca". Usually cooked with salt cod. Not a fan....but my wife brilliantly improvised pan-fried fresh cod medallions. Delightful! And all the fibre you could ever want in one bowl!

Saturday, Feb 1 about 1800. Venus and new moon in close approach. Not a bad photo, even if i say so myself. Lots of earthshine visible. Photo makes the sky seem darker than it was. Venus was really brilliant.

Lunar 'Clair-obscure' features are fascinating and ephemeral. This one reminded me of two big-eyed goldfish in a bowl....apologies for the quality, taken with a smartphone held up to the eyepiece (130 x - 10mm plossl plus 2x Barlow)

October 10, 2024. Working on the RASC double star observing program when the NE sky started to light up. The aurora continued for almost an hour! Photo looks NW over my neighbour's house. FYI, this is in North Etobicoke! Taken with a smartphone, no enhancement.
