I'd recommend the starter set adventure ("lost mines of phandelver") which was expanded into a full book "phandelver and below". Or the essentials kit adventures (starting with "dragon of icespire peak"). Out of the two books I'd go with Xanathar's guide, but either is great and both are optional.
