At some point, the idea of waiving constitutional rights in exchange for a food card permitting the purchase of groceries, or for a ration card for gasoline, may be suggested as both necessary and natural.

You probably shouldn't let arguments like that sneak up on you.

There are two basic responses to offensive behavior: admonishment, which assumes general participation in rational thought and is corrective in intent; and embarrassment, which assumes correction has been refused.

Spend your energy accordingly.
