as a child I thought it was wildly unrealistic that Sims would immediately give up on all their goals and dreams if a single dirty plate was left on the ground but now that I’m an adult I understand that that was the most realistic part of the game

Yes, for MANY various reasons, diapers are a big part of what a lot of people get out of little/middle space.
But you can be a little or a middle even if you have no interest in that part. It's still valid. Yeah, it'll be hard to avoid seeing it altogether because it's adjacent, but you're valid.
