I don't think it's reductive to assert that Dem leadership tends to withhold support from leftist candidates.

He was still a Democrat and everyone knew that. You don't have to be willfully obtuse, you can just celebrate and also say that the DNC needs to be better at supporting leftist candidates instead of doing thinly-veiled support for moderate and conservative primary opponents every time.
