Well deserved Robin. Thank you for ‘Ice Cream for a Broken Tooth’. I’d never preordered a poetry book before.

Is your anger not misplaced in this case? He’s cleaning up another Tory mess isn’t he?

Read it this morning – it is an unfair analysis I felt. They’ve made good progress in a year but have struggled to communicate it. Also working under a terrible fiscal inheritance, where if they slip up and spook the bond markets, everyone ends up poorer.

He’s walking a tightrope really, it’s just so so difficult when you have a narcissist in the White House that doesn’t care about anything but himself.

They are currently doing all of those things, but A) it’s going to take time B) you have to be in power to do them, which means being palatable to the rest of the electorate.

The Labour Party has always been a broad church. We agree on the end goal but just differ on how to get there.

Are those things that I mentioned not socialist policies?

The world is shades of grey and demands a practical approach. At some point, you have to move beyond sixth-form debating and start doing real work, which involves making tough decisions and navigating complex relationships.

Don’t mistake pragmatism for being right-wing.

Renationalising railways isn’t right wing. Great British Energy isn’t right wing. Banning no-fault evictions isn’t right wing. Raising the minimum wage and improving workers’ rights isn’t right wing.

There has been enough principle over pragmatism.

Agreed. Highlighting the benefits of highly skilled migration while showing a commitment to reducing low-skilled migration could be enough. Research also suggests that higher levels of education generally correlate with better integration outcomes too.
