in the meantime, here's a fantastic thread that @georgemonbiot.bsky.social shared yesterday which we discuss within the episode: a history of how we perceive the urban and the rural, contextualising it right within the present moment, and thoughts about the future.

1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

I had a similar phone experience today and I just... hated every second of it. At first I thought it might be the kind of system Deaf people use, but I quickly ruled that out

Congrats!!! I don't live in NYC, but I'm so excited for what this change might mean for all of us

Ouch, that's terrifying

My real point is, don't be terrified. Numbers have become basically nonsense and shouldn't be used as the metric, and you probably wouldn't want to work in a place that did that anyway. Find a place that is a fit for you and convince them that you're a good fit for them

That's a great point. When I applied to my (first) postdoc, I was an author on I think around 60 papers, but I was only a "primary" author on like 3 by then (using "primary" because some groups alphabetize names). The total number does show my "support" roles, but that's harder to quantify.

Feeding America has a page where you can input your zip code and it'll show you all of the food banks near you overlaid on a map. If you need it, it's there. If you don't need it, think about donating money if you have it and your time if you don't.

Donate to your local food pantry or a reliable bigger organisation, too, or if you can't feasibly do something like this. Help your community, if only because it will make Republicans mad
