Yes! The argument also assumes the political positions should be based on how well they play to a crowd. But that's a way for unfunded autocrats to gain power -- coasting in on mob vibes. Parties should be expressing deeply cherished values. Commitment to human expression, for example.

Still thinking about this: "NO KINGS, NO SLAVES, NO NAZIS, NO EXCEPTIONS" is exactly the kind of chant that is easy to remember, easy to defend, and easy to join - if you're just walking past a protest and you want to support it, but feel overwhelmed/shy/unsure of how to jump in.

"Moral clarity has its own purpose" is a perfect touchstone for this moment. There may be better political strategies than adhering to one's own sense of decency. But tactically, you have the benefit of never needing a poll or a pundit to tell you what your own ethics are.
