The fence is finally down at Overton Park, and the Old Forest Trail is officially open!

Proud that this was made possible by the $3M grant award I secured for Overton Park & the Memphis Zoo. This is one of Memphis’ last stretches of true urban forest—these upgrades will support it for generations.

The Senate caved.

We had the upper hand, the public was behind us because they knew we were fighting for their health care, we came into the week with electoral victories nationwide — and 8 Senators still caved.

You don’t win by backing down when you’re ahead, or by giving a bully what he wants.

Five weeks into the GOP shutdown and Republicans still refuse to negotiate.

They’d rather starve poor people and kids who depend on SNAP than restore the health care tax credits that help 81,000 people in Memphis afford coverage—all to pay for tax breaks for some of the wealthiest people on earth.

You have to ask: why keep the House locked during a shutdown?

We could vote to fund SNAP, pay our troops, reopen government.

But Speaker Johnson knows once we’re back, Democrats will have the votes to swear in Adelita Grijalva—and release the Epstein files.

That’s why we’re in recess.

I’ve been in DC nearly all week. Haven’t seen a single one of my Republican colleagues.

The GOP shut down the government to protect tax cuts for billionaires—and now Speaker Johnson’s literally locked the doors so we can't even vote to feed families on SNAP, or pay our troops and federal workers.

Any family who received ACA tax credits will pay AT LEAST $1,000 & up to $18,000 more for healthcare starting in January if the GOP gets its way.

You pay more so that people making over $400k, multi-millionaires, & billionaires can get new tax breaks.

That's what the GOP shutdown is about.

The Bolton indictment came from an independent process. Trump’s cases against Comey and Letitia James? Built purely on revenge, not law—even his own prosecutors refused them.

Now he’s parading his AG, FBI Director, and VP on camera to publicly threaten other critics.

It's been over a month since I signed the petition to release the Epstein files—and look what's happened.

The GOP shut down government, ran for the exits & are blocking a new Democrat from being sworn in who could give us the votes.

You don't go to these lengths to hide nothing. They're panicked.

The long-term solution to crime is better schools, more job opportunities, more mental health resources, and real law enforcement partnerships. Not the National Guard.

Trump's deployment won't solve crime. The real concern is it's a cover for ICE to rip good, hardworking people from our community.

Pope Leo warned when wealth is prized above values, society is in trouble. He’s right. Musk chasing a trillion—and a President cashing in on crypto—prove how warped it’s become.

Billionaires don’t pay a fair share in taxes. That’s why @wyden.senate.gov & I introduced the Billionaire Income Tax Act.

The FBI, DEA, and ATF are trained in law enforcement. They know Miranda rights, they know policing, and they CAN help cities lower crime.

But the National Guard isn’t trained for that, as even Kash Patel knows. Memphis needs real law enforcement partnership — not political stunts.
September 18, 2025 at 1:33 AM
Calling in the Guard isn’t even about trying to help people in Memphis, where crime is already down significantly over 2 years.

It’s about a show of force. Trump turned the DOD into the “Department of War” and he wants to use it—by sending troops into blue cities like they’re battlefields.
September 15, 2025 at 9:52 PM
More good schools and access to education. More career and job training opportunities. More police officers who live and are invested in Memphis.

That's what's going to help lower crime in the long run. Not the National Guard.

Trump’s message to hardworking people and families: airlines can disrupt your flight, damage your property, and you still owe full price.

Don’t expect this administration or the GOP to lift a finger for you as a consumer. Their loyalty is to billionaire donors and giant multinational corporations.
