Last poll in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 before today's election appears to suggest a neck-to-neck race between PVV, D66, GroenLinks/PvdA and CDA.

BUT... always read the fine-print:

Only 26% of the Dutch electorate knew for certain what they would vote on the eve of the election!

Lots could still change.

30% tariffs for the EU on August 1.

I don't expect the EU to roll-over. Instead I would expect Brussels to threaten retaliation, with the aim of a last-minute negotiation leading up to the August deadline. But no guarantees.

Let's see whether the markets take this serious (they should!)

This is textbook Coercive Diplomacy: use force to bring an adversary to the diplomatic negotiating table

But it is an open question whether it will be succesful, or if the strikes simply empower the hardliners in Iran

This Lufthansa flight - like many others - has had to adjust quickly to the escalation between Iran and Israel, avoiding both airspaces.

P.s. this is not the shortest route from Delhi to Frankfurt

Trump threatens 50% tariff on EU imports, while the EU is in talks with the US over a.o. the 20% reciprocal tariffs proposed earlier by Trump

"But it looks as if officials set the tariffs using a formula that takes America's bilateral trade deficit as a share of goods
imported from each country and halves it-which is almost as
random as taxing you on the number of vowels in your name."

(In which case, poor Finns...)

Euro views of the US have deteriorated since Trump 2.0...

...but the fall is not as sharp as during that other Transatlantic Crisis, the Iraq War (GER: 61 -> 25, UK: 75 -> 48, FR: 63 -> 31)

Then again, favourability ratings of the US were higher to start with in late 2002, as opposed to Nov 2024
