even with the shift away from "every game is a complete game" pitchers to bullpens in the early 20th century there's another pretty steady trend around 5 for decades on end and then all of a sudden there's just this massive slope visualizing 40 years of rapid bullpen/roster strategy changes

it's kind of incredible to me how it stabilizes around 8 right around integration and pretty much stays there forever more with very little variation, you can pretty much set your clock to about 8 below average batters on each team's roster

then contrast that with the one for pitchers
