Ahh! The classic Bay Area fall triad: fog, soccer and geese coexisting.

I'm loving the @idlesband.bsky.social-fueled soundtrack for Caught Stealing. The album cover is a chest X-ray most notable for the six foreign objects in the lung fields. Also notable is the right-sided cardiac apex. Does this individual also have heterotaxia?

Thank you, Kun Ling @mayoclinic.org, for hosting me. There’s a lot of great science, especially around #ADPKD and #cilia in the works. It was great to see old friends and make new ones!

So... #Amazon just suggested I buy a biology text book titled "Creating Synthetic Life: A step by step guide" whose author is listed as one Lucifer Aurelius. The excerpt smacks of LLM drivel. @amazon.bsky.social, you might do some curation before putting this on the bookshelf next to #MBOC.

3983 looks like the N-terminal half of PKD1: an N-terminal signal peptide, an extracellular domain, a GPS, then five transmembrane domains. 7607 looks like the C-terminal half of PKD1: a six-pass TRP channel. Could 3983+7607 be a bipartite protist precursor that evolution fused to make animal PKD1?

Sofia Samatar’s “The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain” is a beautiful, slight novel. Like all great speculative fiction, it’s about a lot of things. But it can be read as an allegory of the promise and perils of education. One part “The Dispossesed” and one part Brandon Taylor’s “Real Life.”

Did you like “Real Life” by Brandon Taylor or “The Dispossessed” by LeGuin? Then check out “The Practice, the Horizon and the Chain” by Sofia Samatar. This book is about a lot of things, including separation and solidarity in academia. Beautifully crafted, provocative and challenging.
