Yes but most small accounting firms do not do that. They do not specialize by industry, they specialize by geography. Only exceptions I can think of are people who target doctors.

I actually want to get out of this space because it’s what everyone already does but no one who is targeting a boring industry with regular professional service needs really does this for SMB clients outside of marketing firms themselves.

I mean, yes? It’s how every marketing plan works (or, even better, get a software vendor to pay for the marketing, which I’ve also done a lot of those talks too). I used to run a several million dollar tech assurance audit book lol.

The talks are way older and is still the way professional services are sold to big businesses, if you’re a local with a shingle, you can try but depending on where you live you REALLY need to niche down and do social media marketing primarily to survive.

Oh and if you just want to be an employee, you still need to do “thought leadership” where you essentially advertise yourself by… posting free work on social media like LinkedIn so that people associate you with whatever topic. You CANNOT escape.

How people used to hire a bookkeeper: a job ad, maybe using the phone book or hitting up the local chamber if they were going to outsource

The really insane thing is how deep into the economy this goes. People buy accounting and legal services by finding an influencer on social media and hiring them. You have to create marketing material (for free!) and post it on a platform to get any business.
