A corrupt, authoritarian government seizes an innocent man, tortures and jails him on trumped-up charges that change during a manipulated "legal" process. The prisoner is left at the mercy of dehumanizing politicians & jailers to do with what they please.

Holy Week then. America now.

I've been reading Bonhoeffer's efforts to address moral nihilism. Evil won because people couldn't tell their elbow from their ... in the flood of evil that was the Nazi version of reality. Nihilism kills.

We're thinking about the meaning of theological education today. Some brilliant theologians have agreed to come through and have this discussion with us. If you're in the area, stop by and join us for the conversation.

I wrote this piece for Comment Magazine this past summer. The assignment was to write about forgiveness. That was hard. How does theology hold up when it is pressed to account for Black life? This is a short effort to think about Forgiveness with that question in mind.

From Dietrich Bonhoeffer to James Cone
Our society is in desperate need of restoring forgiveness as a valid category in our wrestling match with the demands of justice. But how, exactly, can we?

A journalist in Germany recently saw my name in the credits. He was confused as to why my name appeared there, and why I have not said anything about the film. I hope this will suffice. I must add that I am currently at work on another manuscript in which I do offer a deeper analysis of this all.

3. I am not now, nor have I at any time, had a role in the creation of the representation of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in that film, nor do I endorse it. I've not been paid for my research help , nor have I requested any payment. I have not had any official role relative to the film.

2. The fact my name is in the credits is not my endorsement of it, or the representation of within it. I was put in contact with the filmmakers, and consulted them on lines falsely attributed to him and things he actually said. They made their own choices with what to do with that information.

1. The filmmakers read my Bonhoeffer book and resonated with it. The narrative of the influence of Black life in Harlem on the young adult Bonhoeffer is central to the story we both tell. But, they are telling it in their way, not mine. The film is not my representation of Bonhoeffer

Friends, my name appears in the end credits for the Bonhoeffer film that will soon be released by Angel Studios. Because it is there, I must clarify a few things:
