There are currently several ordinations traditions for men as well;
There are Theravāda, Thay & Birman traditions, there are Tibetan, Japanesse & Chinesse Canon ordination systems;
Some Tibetan Monks may have families, others can not.

In Tibetan Buddhism there is a huge Topic - one is not permitted to do Mantra japa without an "initiation" from Lama, but still - it is better to recite Mantra without any initiation, because it is the Enlightenment that matters.
Buddha Shakyamuni had no initiations, no monk orders, he attained it.

It is better to have a practicing Monk / Nun Order that is "not valid" as to have none;
At the end of the day - only Enlightenment matters, not how did you attain it, valid or non-valid or at home or in forest;
