Equally bizarre is Shaheen’s game, since she is not even running for re-election when her term expires in 2026. She is on the Appropriations Committee, and part of the weak Republican offer is to pass the appropriations bills that have gone through the committee on a bipartisan basis. Clearly, Shaheen is more concerned with getting those bills done than using important leverage to protect the signature Democratic legislative achievement of this century. Even when Schumer and centrist Democrats have been dealt a strong hand, these are the sort of players who would fold a royal flush.

A gratifying response in the written response last night from the judge in the RI case, where he issued the immediate TRO stopping the suspension of SNAP benefits for Nov. 🙂
Also, the President of the United States stated Friday evening that: I do not want Americans to go hungry . . . [I] ask the Court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible. . . . If we are given the appropriate legal direction by the Court, it will BE MY HONOR to provide the funding . . . Donald J. Two great passages here from the article:
George Orwell once wrote of James Burnham that his fascination was always with power rather than what power was for, whether as a Marxist or later as a man of the right. The same is true of Francis. The real goal of any political activity is always to obtain and enjoy power. Anyone who pretends to regard power as anything less than the final telos—anyone who treats it as only the means to some other end—is either a fool or a liar. This is a hollow, brutal vision of political life. Francis’s protests boil down to imagining that he, or people like him, were once in charge and that they should be again. Francis resents the left because it stands in the way of this. Resentment at having been dispossessed—and the desire to repossess—is what animates thin spirits like Francis. Justice, and every other pseudo-political value, is entirely beside the point. Alas, intellectual history bears sad witness to the fact that many defenders of the worst injustices were neither stupid nor ignorant. Francis, for example, was an undeniably erudite man, and he made an original contribution to radical-right theory. The major themes of his thought are dispossession and resentment. Even more than most other right-wing thinkers, Francis was fixated on the many ways the unworthy had taken something that rightly belonged to people like him.

The SDNY filing on 8/5 for the Epstein docket, is interesting here too. This seems to be slightly different here. Here they seem to be saying that they hadn't been able to contact 1 of the victims mentioned by name to the GJ by 8/4.
It could be that the update for Epstein hasn't been processed yet.
Seventh, regarding the Government’s approach to victim notification of the instant proceedings, as noted in its July 29 submission, the Government has provided notice of the unsealing motions to all but one of the victims who are referenced in the grand jury transcripts at issue in the motions. The Government still has been unable to contact that remaining victim. With respect to victims who are not identified in the grand jury transcripts but who have previously received victim notifications in the Maxwell and Epstein matters, the Government will over the coming days alert those victims to the fact of the unsealing motions.

Well worth a read.

The right's new narrative about people needing and wanting less fits in well with the coming eco-fascism.
Which brings me back to politics. Telling us what the point of it all is will be the task of any political movement who wants to capture millennial and gen Z power in the next few years. If we don't give people permission to dream bigger and want for more - and prove that more is possible! - the right's story about wanting less and settling for less will stick.

A good review. Much for me to think about, and I was especially taken by this passage. I wonder if Hayek approved of his asserted "belief of conservatism" here.
The essence of conservatism and the broader right has, as Hayek wrote in "Why I Am Not A Conservative", is the belief that there are recognizably superior persons in society who are entitled to greater agency, wealth, status and political clout. In moderate forms this can be reconciled as Rogers notes, with a commitment to democratic and liberal principles. But as Corey Robin argues in The Reactionary Mind, when conservatives feel that liberals or the left have been “in the driver's seat” for too long they are pushed by their own agency to reject an unworthy present and adopt the future as their preferred political tense. This will be a future where we will once again recognize, as James Fitzjames Stephen put it, that to obey a real superior is a great virtue. And the multitude better remember it.
