That's it for my series on Stephen Malkmus, truly a singular songwriter, singer, guitar player, bandleader, and interviewee. If you missed any of the posts analyzing one song from each of Malkmus's nine solo albums, the entire series is collected here:

Besides this amazing character actor run, Hootkins has a connection to the JFK assassination!

In the late 80s, my sister and I taped La Bamba off of cable and wore the tape out. She recently discovered that someone has a tattoo of Bob. Iconic!

Sam Prekop should win an award for album cover photography. The image is a perfect gateway to the music. I want to know what sort of music makes you feel like you are floating over a cloud. After listening, the album fulfills the cover's promise.

My favorite cover of the year is MJ Lenderman's version of the This Is Lorelei tune "Dancing in the Club." Lenderman presented a lovely rendition of the song last night in Asheville and I heard at least one person singing the melody while walking away from the venue after the show.

It's alway great to read what Jeff Tweedy thinks of other musicians, but I especially enjoyed this interview with @hearingthingsco.bsky.social when he discusses his contemporary Bill Callahan:

I'm all in with The Lowdown! There's so much in my wheelhouse: the used bookstore/homebase, the gestures and homages to the great 70s noirs, the dusty Tulsa feel, and the Rez Dogs cameos. Hawke and Harjo complement each other perfectly. More episodes soon please!

I was able to attend a very cool conversation about art, music, film, and utopia with members of @stereolabgroop.bsky.social at Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center

One of my favorite things about doing the Stephen Malkmus Series is reading as many Malkmus interviews as possible. They are filled with gems, especially any that includes the words: [Stephen does a French accent]

Dirty Three? Terry Allen? Ryan Davis? Lenderman? BASIC? Chicago Underground Duo? Orcutt Shelly Miller? A 3 DAY SML RESIDENCY?!

I kinda want to start writing my 2026 Big Ears preview right now

The latest single-artist series from Recliner Notes will focus on the songs of Stephen Malkmus. From a legacy standpoint, his solo work with and without the Jicks has been slightly taken for granted. Each post in the series will analyze one song from each of the nine solo albums. Watch this space!

There are moments throughout a Simon Joyner & the Nervous Stars performance when they are a great shit-kicking roadhouse band.

After a long gap, I'll be starting a new single artist series on Recliner Notes next week. Each post will be a deep dive on an individual song from that musician.

Terrific conversation about Neil's "Music Arcade." Here's what I wrote about it when Joel Berk and I broke down Neil's Broken Arrow for @aquariumdrunkard.com

Through his arrangement with Heaven's Door bourbon, Dylan officially owns 25% of The Last Refuge in Louisville. I'm not sure if he actually is aware of that. Regardless, the place is a gorgeous old church with stained glass windows and an incredible selection of bourbons.
