What I have enjoyed about it is reducing my computer towards "do exactly what I want and no more."

especially on Arch+hyprland. very minimal, using TUIs like it's the 90s, could not recommend this to any normal human BUT:

it is *so* nice that my computer does not do things I do not tell it to do

I do get hallucinations though. I would hope states might have plans to try and educate people on the limitations of the tech, the need to fact check and how to do so, perhaps if anyone has figured out if there are generally useful follow up prompts, model quality etc.

I also had a friend at the graduate level where LLMs helped surface niche papers and information that helped him understand and complete a Masters level thesis + associated research in Astrophysics.

So I mean, I think it’s a useful tool if students don’t just use it to be terrible and lazy.

Everyone gets angry at this but honestly I’ve tried prompts I would have had independently studying programming in middle school. I wish I could teleport this tech back to me. It can tell you stuff at least about CS/programming that’s college level, I think that’s valuable.

I'm not sure which is worse: that half of what you see is inauthentic bait to farm engagement, or that half of what you see is authentically held beliefs by actual humans.

I’d agree with this even personally enjoying AI for search to a good degree. Let people work how is best for them… much better than micromanaging outcomes.

The biggest impediment to children interacting is that parents forbid it. Nobody speaks about it but it’s a pretty universal truth in my experience. Parents forbid their kids to go anywhere and interact with other kids freely. Banning AI won’t fix the collapse of trust in the USA.

I actually tried some prompts I would’ve given it as a kid and verified it against what I learned in college. Computer science / programming information.

I agree with wanting kids to interact more - but banning a learning tool to do that feels populist and harmful.

LLMs can be really helpful for learning. I would lament seeing the technology outright banned. For me personally as a middle schooler it would have helped inform me of topics I didn’t learn about until getting to college.

AI companions aren’t the only use case.

i mean that’s not true, we have Chicago, Boston, Washington DC metro, all have notable transit in my mind. Seattle’s is growing as well.

Lots of immigrants in most places including those with worse transit too.

my understanding too is that trump’s support is in part due to winning more support from nonwhite groups.

obviously, this is a white supremacist administration, but like, this shit isn’t just white men. sure helps the oppressors to make it that, though, so we fight one another and not them.

real talk, as a white dude who has spent a solid chunk of the last couple months crying over this - I’m hurting with constant assumed support to characteristics I didn’t choose to be born with.

the fascists condemn all of us. this division is intended to help the oppressors.

I wrote an impassioned response via the online form. I do not know if it will do good, but thank you for remarking on this council vote.

The worst bit is it just enables these companies. Like, if an app is causing you distress, FUCKING STOP. But it's addictive, and living kinda sucks for *gestures*, so people just turn to these obviously malicious companies and *keep rewarding it*

(Character limit really screws with my ability to write. For context, he switched because of the USA's [short-lived] TikTok ban.)

I e-biked around San Diego for nearly a year as my sole transportation. If I wasn’t so much of a homebody these days, I’d probably be using my bike more. Especially if the city had a better bike network (not the most comfortable to go PB to downtown and vice versa)
