Here is my “why”. Connecting with students as humans, making music together, shared experiences and developing meaningful relationships. Children flourish with music 🎵

Very grateful to have had the chance to write a story for
@nytimes.com about composer Julia Perry, her brilliant and tragic career, as well as the incredible, ongoing work so many have contributed to that makes her music accessible to performers and audiences!

Her Music Fell Into Obscurity. Now It’s Back at the Philharmonic.
Julia Perry’s “Stabat Mater” was well received in the 1950s. But it took until this week for the New York Philharmonic to program it.

It’s Transgender Day of Remembrance. So many of our community are taken from us through violence. It’s violence stoked by fear and ignorance. That means it is preventable. And that means we have a duty to try and prevent it.

My brave, fabulous child vocalists who have self-assessed music performance anxiety perform today. This is week 8 of data gathering for my PhD research. 7 weeks of group lessons, one performance and 3 draw and tell sessions have been an incredible chance to connect with these fantastic humans.

Today I wrote. Just two x 25 minute blocks. But I was writing and it was guilt free and I felt supported and part of something. Thank you for the ideas, inspiration and posts from everyone participating in #AcWriMo

Resilience in the face of oppression. I watched ONEFOUR: Against all odds today - tripped over it by accident on Netflix. I’m glad I did. Manager Ricky Simandjuntak "When you look and see the potential in people, rather than focusing on their mistakes, you might find something beautiful."

My amazing team of experts (voice students aged 8-11 years) shared their fears about singing with me this week. Is there anything here that surprises you? When students share their fears, it’s important to listen, validate and be empathetic 💗🎵

Who lives assignment sheets? Theo the cat loves assignment sheets. We ALL love assignment sheets! Day 4: Still marking, going very slightly mad 🤪
October 4, 2023 at 12:28 AM
New to under grad marking. Have had a lot of caffeine. Have started shouting out scary random things including: “use the rubric! please please for the love of marks - the rubric!” and mournful “noooooooo!” And some very excited “yes! yes! yes!” 🤯

Doing "very serious" PhD work today, recording an information video for my research participants when I had a special guest join me. Nico NEVER wants cuddles and smooches with me. And I never hear him purr 🐈‍⬛🤣 youtu.be/LxYWyq2d0Kc

I absolutely love live music, musical theatre and slushies (that may or may not contain vodka). QPAC and Mamma Mia made my dreams come true on Tuesday night.

Congratulations on a wonderful production!
