Feeding people. Growing things.
Protecting land & water.
He Sapa, SoDak, USA
Chicken chili verde w/ white beans, (2) 13” wheels sour cream cornbread (leftovers for breakfast or late-night snacking), a hotel pan of apple cake, and (only!) half of this giant grabbed-from-a-giveaway autumn display Jarrahdale squash, roasted, because it is BIG.

Flying solo for T-day.
But I picked up some extra roasting chickens the other day, having an inkling that a feed might be needed.
Got the call yesterday: a colleague’s grandpa in hospice and lots of family to be fed.
Menu already written in my brain…

Pile o’ Dirt Porter: an excellent way to celebrate the final digging of this season’s (very dirty) carrots

Berner mixes are the sweetest babies! And they do grow into those paws. Here’s our nearly 3yo, 100lb Berner-Shepherd mix

I see we have a final day of garden harvest & general yard clean up before Mama Nature ramps up the outdoor fridge/freezer space.

A movie that takes place where you’re from.

Escaped to the woods today—just a gorgeous mid 40’s-50’s calm sunny day for waging War on Christmas™️ (jk—it’s really liberating baby aspen from invading white spruce) and general clean up of slash and old downed rotted pine.
Tuesday the temps plummet—hoping for enough snow to burn slash this year.

I’ve had people see my Corgi-mix boy’s face in the car window, assume he’s a black G.S., and upon seeing the rest of him ask, “what happened to his legs?!?” 😂

This one is very helpful with the leaf-raking.
(Also her ball is stuck under my car, so I am not allowed to work til I dislodge & throw it)

At the start of our dark months, when no direct light shines on our canyon home, we still sometimes get lovely reflected light on the creek 🩷

A selection of the demis of plum wine bottled today. They’ll age for a year before drinking (though I had a glass of the leftovers & it wasn’t bad!)
Next bottling is chokecherry batch #1, but not til New Year’s.
Might do some demis of that for gifting, but the full size has never gone to waste 😁

Officially THAT time of year ❄️

Made crust a few days ago in anticipation of the first pie of the season, using some of our small (off-year) apple harvest 🍎🥧

November double-dip!
Air temp 63. Creek temp a shockingly refreshing 42.8.

A few years ago, my friends from
@cyclefarm.bsky.social gave me a bouillon jar full of seeds from their experimental diverse hardy kale crop.
Harvested a bunch before the hard freeze a few days ago, blanched & froze. BUT! Hard freeze didn’t kill the plants, so there’s gonna be more!

I keep telling my husband in the evenings that, “you know, it’s actually an hour earlier; we just haven’t changed the clocks yet.”
This morning however, I’m sticking with DST & reprocessing unsealed jars in the pressure canner at SEVEN A.M. (not six!)
(I am making his coffee! 😁)

Left the canyon this morning for an upper-elevation firewood-water sample-camper winterization run, and spotted this crew of Bighorns roadside.
End-of-the-day shot leaving the ranch had me thinking I won’t need to buy ice (will pack w/ snow) for the water sample cooler for the next 6 months.

Why yes, I did do a full-on ass plant into the cilantro while broadforking an adjacent bed. I’m unharmed save my ego, and the cilantro will also likely recover!

Of course women don’t like the Cybertruck.

Women only want one thing, and it’s an LMC Snowcat

When your org suddenly realizes they need to give away the annual meeting autumnal display, it’s great to be a grower who knows…

I had to do something with the leftovers of a pizza sauce canning project!
With chunks of braised kabocha squash & roasted garlic, leftover pot roast, sautéed onions & mushrooms deglazed w/ super-umami pot roast juices, a sprinkle of feta and cilantro

The traditional scraping-on-my-windshield to memorialize the END
(Except for the kale, daikon, beets, cilantro, scallions, etc.)
(Oh, and that one summer squash plant that took so long to produce & is now going bonkers, so we covered it)

Duluth! I have summited your Rock Knob! I have claimed my free-w/-admission pint glass at the Apple Bash! And I have seen people dear to my 💜
But there is frost projected on my gardens tomorrow night, so homeward to other dear ones I go
October 11, 2025 at 10:12 PM
Still no frost on the home front.
Escaped (after roasting & freezing all the ripe ‘n ready tomatoes) to the Northwoods for a spell.
