Great news! This issue has emerged most recently in a contested case on proposed uranium exploration, in which a number of parties are first language Lakota speakers. 🔥
Repeated appeals to include interpretive services have been rejected by the state Board of Minerals.
Committee backs state-funded interpretive services in contested cases
Lawmakers advance a bill requiring state government to pick up the bill on interpretive services during a contested administrative case.

Made the crust between meetings & appointments so we’d have the yummy pizza night tonight.
Leftover Krull’s (Hill City grocery) deli fried chicken & homemade braised winter squash, diced mushrooms, sweet peppers, black olives.

It has been a DAY.
A bowl of chocolate “ice cream” (of the non-dairy variety I can digest) bathed in a puddle of both maple & elderberry syrups was practically mandated.
*Sigh*

Wasn’t up for a full day of work in the woods yet after this latest bout of flu-sinus-crud.
But, oh! The air was so clear & lovely as I slogged through actual SNOW for a couple hours at 6100’ grabbing water samples and assessing wind damaged trees.

I swear I completed so many lil pieces of so many projects today that I can’t even account for all of it.

AND I got to stand in the SUN streaming through the upper window of my office like it hasn’t done since early November.

Feels like getting ahead ☺️

COMMENT TO SAVE CRAVEN CANYON!

Canadian mining company, CNEC, seeks to drill for uranium on Federal land, which rests on the edge of Craven Canyon - a sacred site that contains 8,000-year-old ceremonial petroglyphs carved into the rock wall.

So much for subscribing to PennCo Public Safety Alerts. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Got nothing from them.
Apparently still at large somewhere (they think) between Spring Creek & Rapid Creek watersheds

In a cabin in a canyon w/ no direct sunlight from +/- beginning of November to +/- beginning of February, I am totally vibing w/ #BigFebruary excitement
A quick reminder of what #BigFebruary is about…
Thanks to the magic of the cosmos, we start gaining daylight much faster in Feb than in Jan. Over 20 mins a week - setting us up for Spring.

Damn. I don’t remember why I was at home, but I remember sitting on the floor of our living room, watching the launch and subsequent explosion on tv.
Forty years ago, today, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in mid air after being launched, killing all 7 crew members; one was a school teacher. It was a sad day for space travel & history.

Waking up at 3:30am with the cold nipping at your nose & house dark & silent.
Wood fire died down, it’s -20-ish outside, & the pellet stove’s out of pellets or it’d be glowing.
Then the backup-backup cove heat comes on & by god we’re not paying THAT electric bill, so time to get up

Hard to take my mind off friends in MN, but there’s plenty (so much plenty!) of work to do here in Western SoDak.

Good feelings tonight as Hot Springs City Council voted unanimously to support neighboring Oglala Lakota County’s request/appeal to hold uranium exploration permit hearing locally. 🧵

i feel like the viral bus thread resonates because at every step of the way you're like "ok surely this will be resolved shortly, any second now," which seems like what all the passengers are also thinking. then the fact that the situation doesn't resolve and the bus just keeps going is an Allegory
