This is a little corny, but I still can’t believe it's real whenever I see my book for sale at the airport. And right next to uncle Bernie!

I rarely let myself celebrate my wins (always pushing towards what's next). But getting the paperback copy of By The First We Carry in the mail it all hit me. I looked at that first page and thought, “damn, I did that.”

Excited to share that the paperback of By the Fire We Carry will be out next week! I am so honored that so many have read and enjoyed the book. Would love to see you at these upcoming fall events:

Got to spend 2 magical weeks in the Adirondacks with other Native creatives. Pushing back against erasure in our respective fields can be a lonely path. Being in community was so healing. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Thank you to Blue Mountain Center for hosting.

Had an amazing time @ the Harbor Springs Festival of the Book! A career highlight was watching Eileen fucking Myles buy my book! The 22-yr-old queer baby inside me that idolized them was dying, but I managed to keep my cool.

Gonna be (mostly) off social media the next few weeks so I can go deep on my writing. So grateful for the time to focus while I’m at Good Hart Artist Residency and Blue Mountain Center.

Lately, I’ve been feeling personally burned out & globally pessimistic. With the state of the world as it is, it can feel futile–or even self-indulgent–to go off into my little corner & write. Did some reflections to try & get re-grounded in my purpose & why I write. Here is what I came up with.

Got this email this week. I think I got on Dr. Oz’s PR list from writing about long COVID. As someone who lives with long COVID, watching these grifters reshape the public’s understanding of chronic illness is terrifying.

I'm fresh out of outrage this wk, but I will say this. The American myths the Trump admin is using 2 build its version of nat'lism have been here since the founding. The racist idea that this continent rightfully belonged 2 Europeans (then Americans) is something our country has nvr truly confronted

Overjoyed to be spending the next two weeks at Good Hart Artist Residency. If you’re in the area I’ll be speaking at the upcoming Harbor Springs Festival of the Book. Taking the next two weeks to go deep on my next big project—a new podcast series!! 👀

Got vaccinated today! Despite the chaos of last week’s Congressional hearing and this year’s vaccine roll out it was super easy. There are eligibility restrictions if you are under 65, but the list of health conditions that could have qualified me for this year’s shot included not exercising enough

I can’t believe it’s been one year since the publication of By The Fire We Carry! Publishing my first book while in the throes of long COVID was one hell of a ride. When we recorded the audiobook, I still couldn’t read because covid affected my eyes’ ability to focus.

Finally made it out to the War Club exhibit at the @ Philbrook created by Yatika Fields and Anita Fields. One of the objects on display was the guest book during the occupation of Alcatraz.

I met Beverly Little Thunder a long time ago at one of the east coast Two Spirit gatherings. In the years that I’ve known her, I’ve sat in ceremony with Beverly, fallen for her mouse joke, listened to her stories of coming out at a time when it wasn’t safe, learned how she...

Another Cherokee Holiday in the books. I got out and about a lot less with my illness these past couple years and it was sooo good to see folks and catch up.

My latest substack is up! We keep framing the mascot debate as as whether or not Native Americans are offended. But the reason these mascots are still around is about how they make white ppl feel. Read and subscribe gohini.substack.com

Did you know that when a redwood dies and falls in the forest it can take over 500 years for the log to rot? For perspective, that is twice as long as the United States has been a country. There are rotting logs on forest floors that are older than our government.

The extreme & genocidal violence with which the U.S. expanded west is nothing to be proud of--but it has everything to do with our current political moment.

You don't have to look far back in American history to realize Trump's actions are not "unprecedented" or "un-American".

After decades of disenfranchisement, this week the Supreme Court of Muscogee Nation ruled that freed people descendants have a right to tribal citizenship based on the treaty of 1866.

Here are the books I’m reading this summer (for work and fun). Do you know any of these books? What's on your summer reading list? Books: A Calm & Normal Heart by Chelsea T. Hicks, Sula by Toni Morrison, James by Percival Everett, Playing Indian by Philip J. Deloria...

“On the far end of the Trail of Tears there was a promise.” Five years ago today the Supreme Court upheld the reservation of Muscogee Nation and Oklahoma denied its existence for over a century.

When Ann Coulter says enough here she means all.

Right now, a lot of people are trying to understand the role of the Supreme Court in our democracy. So honored that By The Fire We Carry made this New York Times list of best reads on the topic. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/02/b...
