This weight presses on me every day. I am flooded with stories. There are so many I cannot remember them all; cannot keep straight who was gassed, beaten, abducted, or shot. I write to leave a record, to stare at the track of the tornado. I write to leave a warning. I write to call for help. I want you to understand, regardless of your politics, the historical danger of a secret police. What happens when a militia is deployed in our neighborhoods and against our own people. Left unchecked their mandate will grow; the boundaries of acceptable identity and speech will shrink. I want you to think about elections in this future. I want you to understand that every issue you care about-any hope of participatory democracy-is downstream of this.

I’ve had multiple friends reach out to me wanting to do more in the wake of this. One even sent me this post in humorous self-deprecation. I think at the very least, it is a moment of realization and radicalization for many.

Texas Democrats agree. This is a huge disconnect. It's a big reason why 1.4 million Texas Democrats stayed home in 2024. This received the second-largest applause during Beto's speech. The first? That came later during the question-and-answer section, when Beto mentioned Zohran Mamdani. The crowd went bananas at the mention of his name. They loved him. It matters because the base is sick of being told to sit down and be grateful while corporate-friendly Democrats throw our values under the bus. It matters because voters in Texas, and across the country, aren't asking for moderation. They're asking for meaning. For courage. For a fight. And that's what this rally delivered. You had James Talarico calling out the national party by name. Joaquin Castro is taking on Big Pharma and standing for healthcare justice. Beto calling for Palestinian human rights and invoking Zohran Mamdani like a damn rallying cry. You had a crowd that cheered louder for a New York socialist than for any safe, centrist talking point. That should tell you everything. This wasn't Democrats begging for crumbs. This was Democrats organizing for power.

He didn’t say those words. Please know the facts before you decide validity. You have to be more discerning that this Maggy. Do you live in NYC? If not, can I offer some advice? Tune all the way in, or all the way out. Paying only half attention to the loudest voices will have you confused.
Q: So I wonder what you think about that, about the phrase "globalize the intifada" and what we've seen as some anti-semitism coming from the left-wing protesters. A: The first thing as you were saying is anti-semitism is a real issue in our city and it's one that can be captured in statistics, the ones that you're citing. It's also one that you will feel in conversations you have with Jewish New Yorkers across the city. And I remember one conversation I had with a friend of mine after the horrific war crime of October 7th. He was telling me that he went for Shabbat services at his temple and he was facing forward when he heard the door open. And he turned back with a chill going up his spine because he didn't know who was coming in. And that's more than a year ago. And then just a few weeks ago, I had a conversation with a Jewish man in Williamsburg who told me that the same door he would keep unlocked for decades is one that he now locks out of a fear of what could happen in his own neighborhood. And I think that this is something that has to be the focus of the next mayoral administration, is not just talking about it, but tackling it. And these are the conversations that have informed our commitment around increasing funding for anti-hate crime programming by 800% in our Department of Community Safety. To the question of language that's being used. I am someone who I would say am less comfortable with the idea of banning the use of certain words and that I think it is more evocative of a Trump style approach to how to lead a country. And- Q: Does that just make you uncomfortable? Like the phrase globalizing intifada. And like the phrase from the river to the sea, does that make you uncomfortable? Or do you think- A: Okay, those are different. Those are super different. Q: They're not really. A: Those are like different genres. Q: I'm sorry, l'm asking so wrong. Then they're not really different to me. And to some people they are not different. A: I know people for whom those things mean very different things. And to me, ultimately, what I hear in so many is a desperate desire for equality and equal rights in standing up for Palestinian human rights. And I think what's difficult also is that the very word has been used by the Holocaust Museum when translating the Warsaw ghetto uprising into Arabic because it's a word that means struggle. And as a Muslim man who grew up post-911, I'm all too familiar in the way in which Arabic words can be twisted, can be distorted, can be used to justify any kind of meaning. And I think that's where it leaves me with a sense that what we need to do is focus on keeping Jewish New Yorkers safe. And the question of the permissibility of language is something that I haven't ventured.]

Thomas says it all began with an eviction in Killeen, Texas, which is about an hour north of Austin. Thomas didn't know where he'd go next, so to get things out of the apartment quickly, he says he moved all of the stuff into the front yard. While he was gathering things up in the yard, he was joined by his rottweiler, Miss Sassy Pants, whose leash he had tied to a pole. Then Killeen police showed up. Thomas says they asked for his ID without telling him what he was in trouble for. He says he responded: I haven't committed a crime and I don't want to talk to you. They told him that they'd gotten a call about a dog being tied up. Next, they asked if he had the dog's immunization records or chip number. He said they checked her chip and didn't see Sassy's name, so they told Thomas they'd be taking her to the pound. The dog was loaded into a truck, and Thomas says at this point, he was arrested. Killeen police confirmed that he was arrested for suspected trespassing with no other charges. That's a misdemeanor in Texas. He went to the Bell County Jail, where he says a court-appointed lawyer told him he could be sitting in a cell for eight months if he wanted to take the case to trial. After about 30 days in jail, which resulted in losing his job as a janitor, Thomas says he signed paperwork to be released with conditions. But instead of being released, he was transferred to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Waco. He was there only a few hours before being transferred again to an ICE detention camp in Conroe, Texas, just north of Houston.

People are quick to reap LA's benefits while dismissing the entire culture. People will exclusively take from LA then claim the city is fake. As if there was anything genuine about coming to a city to get what you need while complaining the whole time that you needed it at all. I'm sure they'd be ready to clarify that it's not the people, it's the city itself, and that's frankly even more frustrating: the fact that they think the two can be divorced. That the place can be separated from the people. It can't.

Last week, Wired reported that US Customs and Border Protection tested DNA from hundreds of thousands of people, including as many as 133,539 children and teenagers, between October 2020 and the end of 2024 - and that the data was being stored indefinitely in a system originally built for violent criminals.
