If you're doing data gathering ethically, then it should be reasonably expected that you will be following things like this.

Too many people have been burned by crowdfunding a project which was practically just an idea only for the founders to just vanish with the money. It's just a matter of actually having something to show before asking for crowdfunding imo.

Personally for me the major problem is that absolutely no effort was taken to even try and at least anonymize the data.

One would hope it is actually an opt-in option rather than an opt-out since being part of a dataset should require explicit consent.
