Good summary! Extra context, its first and foremost a PRONOUN, the contraction part is secondary at best. Its hard to explain if you didn't grow up with it, but "you" v "y'all" is almost like "I" vs "We". I suspect its part of why spelling gets muddled in first place, but could be off.
