Sgt. Fury 5 (Jan 1964) cover by Jack Kirby with George Roussos (aka Geo Bell). Roussos’s rough-hewn, gritty inks really seemed to suit this series. First appearance of Baron Strucker, who would return time and again to clash with Fury and the Howlers, and would eventually go on to found HYDRA.

I’m about 2/3rds of the way through this book. Very enjoyable. Recommended reading.

Sgt. Fury no. 4 (Nov 1963) cover by Jack Kirby. Inks are credited to Sol Brodsky, though it kinda looks like George Roussos (aka Geo. Bell) to me. This is something of a key issue, as it features the death of a regular character, Junior Juniper. A first for Marvel (if you don’t count Uncle Ben).

Here’s a condensed summary of some things I’ve read re: the inking on this cover, from mycomicshop

Sgt. Fury no. 3 (Sept 1963) cover by Jack Kirby. There’s some question about who inked the great, iconic cover: Ayers, Ditko, or Kirby himself. I lean toward Ditko as the most likely inker. Anyway, what a cool image, despite (or because of) all the copy filling the blank spaces.

Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos no. 2 (July 1963) bonus feature page by Jack Kirby with Dick Ayers. Some of the early issues of this title had filler pages like this.

I highly recommend this book. It’s all his EC war comics in one volume.

Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos no. 2 (July 1963) opening splash page by Jack Kirby with Dick Ayers.

Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos no. 2 (July 1963) cover by Jack Kirby with Dick Ayers. One of my favorite #WarComics series, especially these early issues by Jack Kirby, who brought his experiences as a WWII vet to every war comic he worked on.

Our Army At War 282 (July 1975) cover by Joe Kubert. Rock faces off against… a Viking?

Mission accomplished! 🫡

Our Army At War 281 (June 1975) cover by Joe Kubert. Another chilling cover by Kubert.

So here’s a cool thing I get to do tomorrow night. 😀

Our Army At War 201 (Jan 1969) cover by Joe Kubert. Another striking cover by Kubert, as Sgt. Rock has his back against the wall.

Got this cool kickstarter in the mail yesterday! A box set of 15 pre-code horror comics “Authentic Editions” replicas from Macroverse. They’re really beautiful, on newsprint and everything, and housed in a lovely illustrated box.

Yeah, I think that’s right. He did issues 2 and 3, but I only have #2.

Our Fighting Forces 84 (May 1964) cover by Joe Kubert. Gunner and Sarge (with their dog Pooch) was a fairly long-running feature in this title. And a few years later, they’d also be included in the lineup of The Losers. This battle-damaged copy could use the @flatnclean.com treatment!
