Pretty cool that our local high school band from L.D. Bell HS in Hurst, Texas is marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! The school’s about a 5 minute walk from my house. Sometimes I can hear them practicing, and once a few years ago they marched down our street. Very proud of them.

Sgt. Fury 5 (Jan 1964) cover by Jack Kirby with George Roussos (aka Geo Bell). Roussos’s rough-hewn, gritty inks really seemed to suit this series. First appearance of Baron Strucker, who would return time and again to clash with Fury and the Howlers, and would eventually go on to found HYDRA.

Sgt. Fury no. 4 (Nov 1963) cover by Jack Kirby. Inks are credited to Sol Brodsky, though it kinda looks like George Roussos (aka Geo. Bell) to me. This is something of a key issue, as it features the death of a regular character, Junior Juniper. A first for Marvel (if you don’t count Uncle Ben).

I’m about 2/3rds of the way through this book. Very enjoyable. Recommended reading.

Sgt. Fury no. 3 (Sept 1963) cover by Jack Kirby. There’s some question about who inked the great, iconic cover: Ayers, Ditko, or Kirby himself. I lean toward Ditko as the most likely inker. Anyway, what a cool image, despite (or because of) all the copy filling the blank spaces.

Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos no. 2 (July 1963) cover by Jack Kirby with Dick Ayers. One of my favorite #WarComics series, especially these early issues by Jack Kirby, who brought his experiences as a WWII vet to every war comic he worked on.

Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos no. 2 (July 1963) bonus feature page by Jack Kirby with Dick Ayers. Some of the early issues of this title had filler pages like this.

Our Army At War 201 (Jan 1969) cover by Joe Kubert. Another striking cover by Kubert, as Sgt. Rock has his back against the wall.
