Those guys served as pacers and human windshields and were in front of him until the end. Different pacers were rotated in and out throughout the marathon, so they would be fresh enough to maintain that fast pace.

My current favorite is the Amacx Turbo Gel. 40 grams of carbs/160 calories. Thinner and easier to get down than Gu. A cheaper option is CARBS gels. 50 grams of carbs. All natural. Gigantic. For me, it's just a bit sweeter than I prefer. Both can be found at The Feed.

A2: Lake Waramaug 100K. A 7.6-mile loop around a gorgeous lake. 4 aid stations per loop staffed by friendly volunteers. 50 mile and 50K distances, too. Great for ultra newbies.
