New book: Keeping Women in Their Digital Place (PSU Press)

Upcoming edited book: Religion and AI (Bloomsbury)
Can I brag for a sec? I asked students in a mid-semester eval what I can do to improve the class and one of them wrote:
"Just continue to be yourself, because you are an amazing professor, one of the more inspiring professors I have ever had, (-->)

When I was a Hill staffer in 2009, a Dem trifecta was trying to pass universal healthcare. In response, Senate GOP released a memo detailing all of the tactics they in the minority could use to delay the effort as much as possible. I'm recirculating that 2009 GOP memo here. Take inspiration from it.

Sometimes I get so upset at all my open tabs I just close them all. I'm not sure this is a healthy relationship.

I got a paper cut from aluminum foil and it funking hurts.
Just thought you all should know and act accordingly.

As a junior faculty, I would email senior faculty to reach out and make connections. Their advice and attention were super valuable in my TT journey. Now, as a senior faculty, I'm reaching out to junior faculty to connect with them. Helpful or intimidating?

And on MLK day....
Anyone who says this was NOT a Nazi salute can — with all due respect — fuck off.

I asked my students in our introduction to comm theory class to select their very own motto, something that explains their worldview.

By far my favorite is "fuck it we ball"

My students are all as excited as media scholars about this #TikTok ban... what will happen? The clock is ticking...

Today I'm taking off my sabbatical "out-of-office" reply, and the only goal I didn't get to during my short one-semester sabbatical was organizing the cluster drawers.

Shouldn't our writing mean something?
I have recently (in the last few months) been on about how unnatural and joyless most #AcademicWriting feels to me. In 2025, I'm pledging to use my writer's voice for comprehensible and relatable (and joyful!) projects.
"A score of 100 means a text can be read by someone aged 10 and a score lower than 30 is very difficult. Humanities scores have fallen from 35 in the 1960s to 18 today, suggesting they're now incomprehensible."

The state of humanities funding in the US is shocking. For every $1000 the feds spend on research, humanities receive a $1.30 🤯

Of the ~$54 billion in research the federal govt funds in U.S. higher ed, only $69 million goes to the humanities (=0.13% of fed total) www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

America's richest 10% now hold 60% of the nation's wealth.

The bottom half of America? It holds just 6%.

Wealth inequality is eating this country alive.

My brill friends @rscarlets.bsky.social & @alexturvy.bsky.social remind us that bans "aim to reduce risks but instead fragment oversight, drive users to less regulated spaces, and reduce transparency while claiming to increase security" 🔥👇
New piece with @rscarlets.bsky.social : The TikTok ban won't work—it'll create exactly what it claims to prevent. Bans don't eliminate platforms, they transform them into less governable forms. Our analysis of the paradox at the heart of platform restrictions:
